Posts and sources on the state of Michigan are cited. Over thousands of years, a succession of Native American tribes colonized the area. In the 17th century, it was inhabited by indigenous, Métis, and French explorers and claimed as part of the New France colony. Following France’s defeat in the French and Indian War in 1762, the territory was taken over by the British.
Until 1800, when western Michigan became part of the Indiana Territory, the area was part of the wider Northwest Territory. Although Michigan Territory was established in 1805, portions of the northern borders with Canada were not agreed upon until after the War of 1812. Michigan was admitted to the Union as the 26th free state in 1837.
